I do think and believe that when women I know had 14-16 kids - I would say they were "raped" - had to give the men their conjugal rights - no woman in that era wanted all those kids particularly when there was hardly any money coming in.
I knew a lady who was part of 22 children but they had money - they knocked two wee houses into one.
Hart's ice cream in St Ives, behind the Sloop Inn - wonderful raspberry sundaes....the old man died with the recipe. HSE wouldn't allow it now but on a spring tide, there was often a stream of water coming through the place as it was below the road level on the quay and water would come over it and down the steps - it didn't faze the cussies.
DTC, I can remember going down to Cornwall and getting pastie's with meat in one end and sweet in the other - they are no longer allowed to serve them like that!!!
