Can anyone explain the cartoon on P17?

A couple sitting on stools at a kitchen table. She is reading a book, he appears to be working with a laptop.

She says "Fancy putting the kettle on?"

The next frame shows her unchanged, he is making tea with his laptop closed and phone etc put away.

Is there a joke in there somewhere that I'm missing?

I can't see the funny side either, but the two here made me laugh, more the PE style. Possible, he's working, she's reading leisurely and he's miffed so he makes one cup?
I also struggled to find the humour, but thought it may have something to do with kettles and other appliances being 'smart, i.e. controlled by a laptop/phone/whatever.

Er, it's about the "internet of things": the man packs all his electronic gizmos away in case his Chinese-made kettle is spying on him. Ed.
