if theres someone you really like as a friend or otherwise and its clear they dont like you would it be better to keep trying to be friendly in the hope they will see how nice you are or give it up as a bad job?

Maybe you're seeing that person as who you'd like them to be ("someone who likes me") rather than who they really are ("someone who doesn't give a fig").
Either way, I wouldn't go out of my way to be rude or mean about it. Why waste your energy?
