i know that with facebook it shows a list of your friends that are on messenger and i'm not so i know that FB shows friends if you're on messenger.
I've been asked to go on whatsapp but dont know what to do
what are the benefits if any?

It only works when you have an internet connection. That's why I put free in inverted as it would be part of any internet usage on your plan. I use it all the time, very good for keeping in touch with close family when away from home.
As long as you have an internet connection and the person you're calling does than yes you can use it abroad (but you will each be using the internet). For example in Antigua this Xmas, there is free wifi where we stayed and I was able to video call my daughter in London all the time. We could see each other and I could wave my phone around and she could see the views that I could see. It's a great app. if you don't want people to see you then you just use it like an ordinary phone call. Press the phone icon rather than the video one.
