Trading Standards say that, unfortunately, there's no definition for 'pie'. That's why, in a pub or restaurant, you can order 'steak pie' and be presented with a plate of stew with a piece of puff pastry plunked on top of it. Ghastly.
Real pies (not containing eels) are a northern speciality !!
Pastry on the bottom of the plate is covered with typically a meat filling, often with onions and potatoes.
Best types are
Steak
Corned Beef and onion
Chicken and leek.
Served with chips and peas AND most importantly Tomato Ketchup!
A certain pie maker with the same name as a very orange football supporting european country makes lovely meat pies, shame I cant find them down south....blimey I am getting hungry now..
