Two of the Aleutian Islands are only a mile or two apart but the international date line runs between them so they are a day apart in time but only a mile in distance!

Yes, one of the Islands is actually part of the USSR while it's next door neighbour is in the USA.

The Farthest Points in the Entire United States

Are you ready for a fun trivia question to trick your friends with? It is a fascinating fact that Alaska is the state that is the farthest north, east, and west while Hawaii is the southernmost state. But, how can Alaska be in both the east and the west?

The reason that Alaska is the farthest east and west is due to the fact that the Aleutian Islands cross the 180° meridian of longitude.
Because its borders extend west and also across the date line.
and not the International Date Line, that is a separate entity.
The two Islands that form the closest point of the USSR to The USA are Little Diomede (USA) and Big Diomede (USSR) they are only 2 & 1/2 miles apart ! How many people realise how close the USA and USSR are in Geography?

Beware of the confusion between the 180 degree longitude (the "antimeridian") and the International Date Line (IDL). Both are lines on a map but the antimeridian is straight whereas the IDL weaves about a bit. The IDL is an adjustment from the antimeridian which aims to keep territories belonging to the same nations in the same "day". The IDL running through the Aleutians veers away from the 180 degrees line so as to keep all of Alaska in the "west" and all of the Russian territory in the "east".
"There is also a place where you can watch the Sun rise from the Pacific Ocean and set in the Atlantic Ocean. i.e. West to East."
