While a member of my family was in waiting room of local GP surgery, the elderly, jolly cleaner was there talking to receptionists and being her happy self, a suited gentleman came in and she said hello with some jolly banter in mood with rest of surgery. The suited man stopped in his tracks and said tersely, "Don't you know who I am? I'm a Professor of( this that and the other) and you address me Sir! Well, the poor woman said, sorry Sir, I didn't mean to upset you" Then went into the back room crying her eyes out. My relative wanted to say something to him but her boyfriend held her back so to speak
She just glared at him as did the rest of people in surgery. I thought that attitude was dead! Gggrrrrr! What do you think?...

PP..eloquently put, that is what I was trying to imply mate.
It's a shame that lady took such bumptiousness to heart. I would have laughed at him. That’s all he deserves. Ignorant oink!
i would probably have panicked and curtseyed to him
Let's hope Doris would have had your knickers ironed in that case, Ael.....☺
Well, it wasn't me folks... honest! I haven't visited my GP's surgery for a while because MrsProf is a professor of medicine herself and gets her prescription pad out when I mention my aches and pains.

Seriously though, this guy needs a reality check and my view is that such behaviour should be brought to the attention of the university authorities, assuming that he remains employed. He is bringing his university into disrepute by acting in this appalling, conceited manner. I've met more than one retired emeritus professor with huge chips on their shoulder and personally, I've no time for them.

I'd really like to meet this vainglorious individual and see how he reacts to being in the presence of an Oxbridge professor. In all my years in academia, I've never been in a situation where I've felt the need to respond to a member of the public in this manner and I fully endorse the suggested responses above. I'd respond the same way myself!
I knew it could not be you 'prof'
Many thanks EDDIE51. I'm grateful for your faith in me! Incidentally, MrsProf reminded me last night that she told me early on in our marriage that she'd deal with all my complaints with the exception of my piles. Can't blame her as we all have that no-go area!

Thanks for your reply Prof: You're obviously a very decent level headed man :-)
Thanks prof, I'm still pretty sure you must have eaten some of the scones I cook when I'm working at MRC Cambridge kitchens.
