Iceberg Lettuces

We went to Lidl yesterday, when we got to the checkout the man in front had a full trolley, including about 20 iceberg lettuces and at least 6 cucumbers.
He told the checkout girl the lettuces were for his chickens but the cucumbers were for himself. I didn't know chickens ate lettuces.
I thought people were being rationed on lettuces.

Maybe he was having a feast eating, preparing a chicken salad for diners or guests

Whether or not people are being rationed certain foods is entirely up to the individual supermarket group....it's not the law!

There's no nutritional value in lettuce for the chickens but mine love them. Just hang up one whole lettuce keeps them amused.

Chickens eat anything, including cooked chicken. He most likely has a corner shop, chickens my foot!

I get my free range eggs from a house up the road, they live opposite the salad greenhouses and the chickens get all the waste stuff to eat from there.
Beautiful eggs, duck eggs too.
I never knew chickens would eat that stuff till the chap explained.

My chickens are free range and eat everything including the cat food if they can get at it. They eat grass,worms,bugs, raspberries from the garden by flying onto the garden fence and pinching them...what did you think chickens ate?

My dads chickens love brussel sprout stalks and cabbages hung from the top of the run, so its not that far fetched

I see people in Aldi's or lidl who seem to be buying for restaurants.
Icebergs are about £1.19 each...20 of them seems expensive for chicken food. How long would that last? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Iceberg lettuce is 75p in Tesco.

I've not looked in Tesco...but both aldi and lidls were 1.19. They are close to each other,with no other supermarkets nearby,so maybe they're not so competitive on that as many might assume they are the cheapest.

Buying for catering is not as far-fetched as it sounds. I once saw a woman fill her trolley chock-full of the cheapest bread and the cheapest baked beans in the store. I surmised that she ran a B&B for people on DHSS. Turned out that I was right. On another occasion I saw a Chinese lady clear the shelves with the cheapest brand of rice and sliced carrots. Again, she worked in a Chinese takeaway. How it is cheaper to buy from a supermarket rather than a wholesaler I don't know. Mind you, these were really bottom of the range items. You never know what you're getting when you buy fast food.

I haven't seen a shortage of iceberg lettuce or anything else for that matter in the two supermarkets I shop ...

If there was a shortage of Iceberg Lettuce it is highly unlikely anyone in this household would notice tbh.

I always remember it as being called Webb's lettuce, as opposed to Cos lettuce.
