How do use moth balls to deter cats in the garden

Removve all faeces, and soak and scrub where possible, the entire area with a strong disinfectant solution - the more pungent the better. Leave several moth balls on each fouling site, and distribute them evenly around the borders. Pay attention to ariel access - fences, walls, roofs and so on, and leave balls there as well.
Maintain the cleaning and distribution, eventually the cats will find it to much trouble and move elsewhere.

The active ingredient in mothballs is - I believe - Napthalene ... here is an interesting wee article about it. It is a very potent smell , so ties in with Andy's theory about scent removal and replacement.
