Why do we drive on the left?
Not for a moment suggesting this is the definitive answer, but if you consider that most people are right-handed, then in days-of-old when we used to settle arguments by sword fight, jousting and the like, it would have been natural to carry the weapon in the right hand and pass each other on the left.
However, when a certain Napoleon Bonaparte came to prominence, things in Europe changed because he was a leftie and marching on the right meant he could keep his fighting tackle in his left hand. Subsequently, any colonies that came under the British influence were left-siders while any colonies under the French influence were right-siders.
As I said, not claiming this is gospel. No doubt somebody will be along soon to say "cobblers." And I might well have to agree with them!
Only just found this post.....thats why its late!
joko is correct about the brain theory.
I am one of a twin (maternal) and left handed, my brother is right handed. I use my left hand for all tasks (and foot!) except knife and fork (copying rest of family when small) but spoon in left. If cutting a joint tho or bread left hand always. Playing sport as a youngster: rounders (they had to change the fielders) when I batted, snooker, cricket all with the left. Ambidextrous for typing tho. Cannot knit (teacher had no patience) but crochet southpaw.
I guess I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have teachers to try and alter this (one or two others have mentioned it) because Yes it did cause some children to stutter etc because their brain was telling them different.
Leonardo Da Vinci was a brilliant man, one of the worlds greatest .......Left Handed.
He used to write backwards (mirror writing), I too can write that way as it is so much easier than left to right. The reason why it is difficult for us lefties is because we are pushing the pen unlike righthanded pulling the pen..we tire more quickly. Hence why a lot of lefties hold the pen from above, to ease the flow!
Sometimes right handed folks don't realise how difficult it is for us, scissors, knives serrated one side, cheque books..the list is endless! But if you go to London, Soho area, visit Beak St The Left Handed Shop sells all gadgets - just for us!!
