I couldn't believe my eyes when it was shown on the telly that evening ! It looked like a flimsy plastic version of the thing we boys used to make out a few bits of wood and a set of old pram wheels. In a climate like ours, launching a mode of transport where you were going to arrive at work every morning soaking wet was foolish in the extreme. As a toy it was OK-ish but as something that going to be used for commuting, it was a complete disaster.
On a more serious note, it nearly bankrupted Hoover, where it was made in their factory at Merthyr Tydfil.
Sinclair really didn't have a lot of luck with his inventing over the years. He came up with with a watch that took two arms to use....one to put the watch on, and another to press the button to get it to work.
An earlier version was a tiny transistor radio, that overheated so much, that most of them had to be sent back to Sinclair for repair.
The man should have stuck with computers, where he had a modicum of success.

Sinclair's C5 was useless and the modern incarnation will Not match the latest Citroën C5 :-

Eddie....until electric cars can be produced with a normal range of miles, and cheaply enough, they will forever remain a niche market, IMHO.
One of the main selling points of this new C5 and the old one, was the ability for it to be driven, on the road, by children, and that thought horrifies me !
I can remember seeing a C5, wedged in-between to lorries, at a set of traffic lights in the 80's. All it had too protect itself, as a flag, at the end of a long, whippy line. Again, another horror.
