Had to ring a credit card company yesterday ( the number was the genuine one )as I was having problems setting up a D/D
I went through the normal security questions, gave the 16 digit number expiry date etc.
But the guy then asked me what was the 3 digit number on the rear of the card was.
Is this right?
I've never known anyone ask for the rear digits. If you're sure it was a genuine phone number maybe he was new and didn't understand the protocol? Phone again and ask.
I was aware of entering the numbers for on line shopping, but then you are using or should be using a secure site/page.
I have never given the 3 numbers to anyone personally.
That's why it's called a security number. The only chink in the armour is that if a card falls into the wrong hands it can be used on-line, but not where chip and pin is required.
I've often been asked for it when buying things over the phone. I don't think the actual card company has ever asked for the security number, though - they usually have security questions about the name of my grandmother's dog etc.
But basically, I suppose that's what the security number is for. You don't need it when paying in a shop.
How on earth would that work? I have a gizmo for on-line banking with which I type in my PIN then get a 6 digit number to enter. If I don't enter it within a minute I have to start again.
