Sliding Hiatus Hernia And Stomach Valve Repair.
6 Answers
Has anybody had the operation to repair the valve to stop stomach acid and a hernia operation.I saw my consultant last week and he has given me the option to have this operation but is leaving the choice to me.I have being on Lansoprozole for 8 years 30 mg for the last 18 months.I had a really bad time 18 months ago with burning and bloating and was also diagnosed with coeliac 12 months ago.For the last 5 months i have felt a lot better and only get the odd day with bloating and burning. At the moment i do no t feel as though i need the operation but he told me to think about it and let his secretary know if i want putting on the list but not to leave it to leave long or i might have to go through the system again.Last year i had a probe in my stomach for 24 hours which showed i am producing a lot of acid. Thanks in advance.

I think it's the op you are talking about? he felt immediately better as soon as he woke up from the op and has never looked back worse than yours are at the moment i think. He couldnt burp for some years, and cant drink fizzy drinks. It was done as keyhole surgery. If you think you'll ever need it done, i would do it now - you reduce your risk of oesophageal cancer in the future and i'm not wholly convinced the op will always be available on the NHS
I can only wish you well(whatever happens),I do have great sympathy as I have a Hiatus Henia.Luckily it is under control with Omeprazole,so I realise that mine is probably not one of the extreme types.
I can only say that if you can have the op on the NHS,then go for it.Going by what bednobs says it is a no brainer.

I have been on
Omeprazole and now Lanzoprazole for many years now for Hiatus hernia. Following a gastroscopy I was diagnosed as having Barretts oesophagus which is a consequence of excess acid production. As this can lead to malignant changes I am now on "surveillance" and have regular gastroscopy checks. It might be worth anyone with acid reflux mentioning this to your GP.

My throat is showing signs of the beginning of Barretts caused by an acid inducing hiatus hernia. The consultant is not concerned about it progressing at this stag, but, it could develop onwards. Just the fear of that is too scary to contemplate. The acid has also caused weakened peristalsis. A 24 hour HP manometry test indicated that I had increased acid levels that I wasn't even feeling, this was a bit of a concern so I'm having the fundoplication done in April. I can't wait.
Bednobs is right. My GP told me that it is very difficult to get the procedure done on the NHS as they'd just rather keep giving you drugs for the rest of your life. I didn't fancy that at all.
