Evening All, ill try and keep this short and sweet. I apoligise if it gets confusing! I am currently working as a civil servant and love my job! I have been working there for almost 5 months and it is the only job that I have enjoyed going to work, rather then dreading each day! But I am only on a 51 week contract which ends just after xmas. My boss is doing his upmost to keep me on and I have made myself indisposable as much as possible. Before I got this job I had a terrible job behind a bar, and previous to that I was unemployed for a few months, which was a massive struggle financially and domestically. My husband has a good job as a landscape engineer, and is in the process of applying for the police force. However, I am concerned as what to do if they are unable to keep me on, so in an attempt to prepare i've been considering my options. I am known to go through career/job phases that simply do not work. I've always wanted to be self employed or work from home, but have no skills or experience as such so makes this option very difficult. I can safely say I have thought of nearly every job under the sun and considered it as a career. My current (long term) phase is continuing my interest in sign language and perhaps go back to learning foreign languages and using this as a stepping board to something else. I know this is going to be a long, hard process, but does anyone have any advice of achieving this? OR what I can do if I lose my job? I have previsouly been self employed as a Childminder (which was not needed in my area unfortunately) and I also owned a commercial contract cleaning business at 18. I am now 22 and hoping to start a family within the next year and so would like to be settled before I do this. I am sorry this is long winded and goes off on a tangent a lot, but any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys!

Perhaps you could start up a cleaning business again or.... as you have experience of running your own business, perhaps you could use that experience to start up something else? Maybe you could teach sign language somewhere - perhaps offer individual lessons in your home? Have you thought about joining the police force yourself? Maybe you could get a job in the police station other than being a policewoman - my local paper often advertises jobs at our local station. Do you have any hobbies that you could turn into a business (either selling things you've made, or teaching others to make them).
Whatever you do, best of luck.

Hi, thanks for you advice. I have thought of the police a while ago, but have since decided that I could not do it! I currently do not want to work with children, as much as I love them. I think because my childminding business didn't pan out as expected it's a bit of a sore point with me still. I enjoyed the cleaning, but would never want to go back into it. The industry and competition is massive now! I love photography, and am currently in the process of learning some skills. I would find it interesting to maybe use this skill insomething, but not sure what yet. I am feeling a little better about my situation now, as I have realised that life is too short to worry. You just need to grab the chance while you have it. Fingers crossed something will come up in the near future. Thanks again x
