In my previous home (5 yrs ago) I had the neibours from hell, all of them. They didnt like me as I was an ex con and they were all so up their own backsides to be real. It made me ill to be living there, I was constantly reported to the council for things I hadn't done, I was threatened on occasions, It was hell. I had an exchange and the neighbores I have now are the loveliest people (OAPs) ever.

We're semi detached. He moved in last March and since then I don't think a day has gone by ,apart from Christmas day, when we are not entertained by whining drills, hammering and banging and all sorts of noise.Tonight we were eating our dinner and there was a constant thud ,thud, where he was knocking the front wall down.
He also does woodwork for his business from the out building ( he's a property and garden maintenance chap ) so there's often the constant wine of a bandsaw.
He's a nice lad and a nice neighbour actually but it is a bit wearing at times .
On the up side though he has done some bits in the garden for us so you have to give and take and he came round with wine and flowers one time and apologised for the noise when he ripped a fireplace out and I thought he was going appear through the wall it was so loud ! I dare say the renovations will hopefully finish soon and we'll get back to normal.

Emmie you say "the people above" by which I'm assuming you mean you live in a flat and you are talking about the people in the flat above yours? Surely you must have a lease which will almost certainly cover things like noise and the times you can and can't make any. I have lived in a few flats in my time and that has always been the case whether purpose built or conversions and run by a management company or the freeholder.
Yes, quite happy on the whole. We are semi-detached. Adjoining are a lovely young couple, she lectures in economics he is a policeman, so comes and goes at awkward hours, but no problem once the dog got used to the sound of his car so stopped barking. Their little children are gorgeous and treat us as extra grandparents - the boy makes bangs and thumps sometimes (probably jumping off the top bunk).
Other side are slightly more tricky, more 'of the people' (if I won't be castigated for that comment) but also very friendly and
trustworthy. He is into motorbikes, but I understand that he needs to rev his Harley occasionally and he never over-does it. I like them, too - but they seem to feel a bit of a barrier exists, although friendly enough. The eldest son (5, rising 6)took a year to speak to me, but now is OK and the younger (3) is bidding to be fine. They are genuine, very honest and nice people (call a spade a spade). We get along. We're lucky I suppose.

We keep ourselves to ourselves but I'd take exception to anyone doing DIY late , it may suit them because of work etc but really that's their problem . As for ringing a bell at 10pm , Emmie you're not alone , I'd be wary even for the best of reasons .
Jourdain2 ... sorry to say you do come across as a snob . I have no idea why either , they're likely far more entitled than you . I'm so glad I absolutely never judge anyone ... apart from myself ;)

It's all about give and take isn't it? Over the years there have been a change of neighbours except for the family on my immediate left, they were there when we moved in. From the beginning and even now (47 years later ) if either of us intend to make a noise we check with each other to find a suitable time.
really great neighbours
wouldnt change them
Vicky Pollard reported me to the police for being in her garden at midnight ( I wasnt - I was in London ) and her mother keeps on fingering new tenants as illegal immigrants but hey ! neighbours are allowed their little foibles ..... O and there is a third we call "Violet Kray" clearly not to her face ( or her son's)
