we've been robbed......
That's a good point, I want a day off!!!!!
Australia had a day off on the Queen's Official Birthday??? Ironic innit!
She's the Queen of Australia so what they do is up to them surely?

Corbyloon.

I on't dispute that. They are perfectly entitled to do as they please. I just think it is ironic, seeing that there is a growing campaign for republicanism in Australia, and we don't even get a day off.

Typo alert

"don't"

they get a day off every year, not just for her 80th, I believe. Anyway, I think this idea of a national holiday to mark Magna Carta is a much better one.
We have a day off every year for the Queen's birthday here in New Zealand. The Kiwis can't believe it when I tell them we didn't get it off in England!
and the dear Queen has chosen to honour Rolf Harris this time too.
Australia and New Zealand are celebrating the birthday of their Queens and she happens to be the Queen of the UK too but they are separate entities.

Corbyloon

If that isn't a technicality, I don't know what is!

I mind on reading that in Australia, there is a legal opinion there may be Queens of each State (not only of Australia) and Elizabeth II is the current Queen of each of them. < I really MUST get out more...>
I suppose it could happen that, say, New Zealand passed a law putting male and female heirs to the throne on an equal footing (there's another thread somewhere around about NZ being the first country to give women the vote), while Britain did not. That could mean, under certain circumstances, the two countries would end up recognising different monarchs.

It is traditional that we allow the Colonials to have a day off but as we are so busy ruling them we are far too busy. :-)

They are saving our 'special' day to celebrate England winning the World Cup :-) (All Scotish immigrants
to work a double shift to cover at no extra pay)

I think its nice that the Aussies and Kiwis have a holiday to remember Freddie Mercury.Such a shame that we can't.

The company I work for are members of SNIPEF the plumbing employers federation who did not recognise our right to a day off for the Golden Jubilee so while most had a day off it was work as usual for the downtrodden. As for Philby`s comment why don`t all the immigrant workers just work, if that day arrives, as they do all the work anyway.

Any excuse for a day off. Are you that much of a Royalist that you`d want to celebrate Her Majesty`s birthday?? What excuse next for a Bank Holiday?
