The difference is that the empty jars (which are not the same as the jam jars) have a re~sealable (airtight) lid that is suitable for home made jams and chutneys.
The lids of the (filled) jam jars are not intended for re~sealing,as once opened they cannot be made air tight again,and as such if you use them for home made jams and chutneys they would soon go off, and become mouldy.
