Luggage Sizes
Hi ABers, just wondering if anyone out there knows the maximum dimensions for a suitcase to be taken on board a plan and stashed in the overhead compartment - we need to replace one of our small "trolley dollies", but we believe that this is smaller than the maximum size allowed - we also suspect that our current suitcase would not fit in one of those funny contraptions that airlines have by their check-in desks. would be grateful for some advice, please. Many thanks, cheers, Chox.

Unfortunately allowed weights and dimensions vary from airline to airline so check on their website. Having said that I've seen bags forced into the overhead lockers that were obviously bigger than the allowed size without challenge. Charter flights are less generous about cabin bags - most seem to allow 5kgs only.

We've never had our cabin baggage checked either, for absolutely ages. Having said that, a few years ago, whilst flying out of Carcassonne, the people at the check in desk weighed our hand luggage - thankfully it was okay. anyway, I have had a look at the website of the usual suspects airlines - Monarch, Easyjet, and Ryanair and they seem to say it's a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20 - which is just the size of the case we're thinking about getting to replace the old one. Actually the old one is under 55cm high, but fatter than 40 x 20, so it does balance out. But we need to replace one of the case because the "rubber tyre" on one of the two wheels tore and came off, so it rattles like billy-o now. And we can't find anyone in our local area to repair/replace the wheel. And the manufacturers say they no longer carry stock of the wheels for that particular model, which is about 20+ years old now! Thanks to everyone for their help this morning! Cheers, Chox.
