There could be any number of causes for your plight. One suggestion would be to examine your diet. Are you getting enough protein?
An inadequate amount of protein will often cause hair loss - that was my problem. I didn't have clumps falling out spontaneously, but every time I brushed it or just ran my hands through it, large amounts of hair would come out. And it was very dull and broke easily. I increased my protein intake to almost double (and improved my overall nutrition), and that eliminated the excessive loss. Plus, the hair quality improved too - a strong and glossy coat. :->

My doc friend has told me that if you go to see your GP - they would be able to refer you to dermatology who MAY be able to help you in some way. Other than that - if you can afford it, go to see a trichologist - look one up in your area on the internet. They charge about 40 - 70 per session but will have likely seen your problem many times and have dealt with it. Good Luck x
