Investigating dual nationality status for an Australian passport holder married to a British citizen
2 Answers
Can anyone help with this? My husband holds an Australian passport and is registered as an Australian citizen, although he's never lived there. He came into this country on his father's passport in 1968. He got his own passport when he was 16, and has an 'indefinite leave of entry' stamp in it. We married in 1993. Until recently, we understood that it was not possible for my husband to hold dual nationality, because he has no British antecedents. He could, however, have given up his Australian passport and taken British citizenship. He has always been reluctant to do this, because he has always had the idea that we may go to Oz to live one day and, once given up, an Australian passport is very hard to regain. Now we understand that, through marriage, it is possible for him to have 2 passports, the Australian AND a British one. I have tried to find out about this through the Home Office, but none of the information there seems to cover our circumstances. It's impossible to get through on the phone. Are there any Australians out there who've taken dual nationality? How did you do it? Great big thanks to anyone who has any ideas at all!
