where does the phrase "hanging on by the skin of your teeth " come from?

"By the skin of one's teeth" means something like the merest, smallest margin possible. Similar imagery to "hanging on by one's fingernails".

I read years ago that is is something to do with breast feeding a child which bites. How it came to get its current meaning, I don't know
