Should parents be told if paedophiles are living in their area?

Even as a parent I am in two minds about this..I just keep thinking about that poor old guy who was murdered because he looked like a paedophile who had their photo in the newspaper ~ I seem to remember he was a tourist and was murdered in Britain while on holiday.

Mob mentality is far too big right now.

I'm afraid I will have to saty on the fence with this one.

I can see absolutely no valid reason for anybody to need to be aware of this information.The authorities will be aware of it , and that is where it should stop.Unfortunately the majority of the population do not have the requisite mental capacity to deal with this information in a balanced manner.

Although i am not a great believer in the ability of the authorities in many areas, we have at some point to rely on their handling of these issues.

Why don't they just tranport all convicted paedophiles to an anonymous island with no kids on it give them all the amenities everyone has and let them exercise their human rights of freedom etc with each other. No parents, no mobs , no do-gooders moaning theyre being mistreated and no threat to any kid- just a thought!

Im a parent and i would definately want to know or at least have a clear picture of what they look like not necessarily where they live just so when i am out at the park or other children orientated places i can be vigilante.

I would definately want to know or at least have a clear picture of them so I would be able to be vigilante when in child orientated places and i could also forewarn my 8 yr old daughter of what sort of disgusting people there are about now and to be on her guard.

I would definitely want to know but then i would just make sure my children never went near them, however, vigilantes are a worry, i don't care if they attack the offenders, i worry about innocent people being wrongly attacked. That is my only worry with it, but maybe if the information was more widespread, then random attacks would lessen as we became more used to knowing where they are..I knew a bloke who attacked someone he thought was a paedophile, it turned out he had been sleeping with a 16 year old girl, (not illegal but he was in his late 40's) Chinese whispers are a dangerous thing. He is now serving 5 years!

On a more serious note, why stop at sex offenders? Why not list the names of all people convicted of any crime? I would like to know if I'm living next to a sc**bag who mugged an old lady to get drug money, or that my car isn't safe because the little yob down the road has a record of breaking into and nicking cars.
In fact, why not go the whole hog and put a big cross on the houses of convicted criminals, or better still brand them?
Of course sensible people wouldn't want that, but can you see where the argument leads?
Another point, the police can't catch vandals at the moment, so how are they going to catch vigilantes who attack people who have possibly done their time and are trying to get back into society and are of no danger to anyone.
Some of the answers to this question show that there is still a lynch mob mentality amongst certain sections of society, which really worries me.
