People do get hit by lightning. A couple of women walking in Hyde Park in London a few years back were killed when lightning was drawn to the metal underwiring in their bras.

See here (though it seems a bit unfair to list them for a Darwin award) http://web.ukonline.co.uk/jmould/darwin.htm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5106510.stm Saw this today as well. Just thought i'd add it on since it waws related.
why is this crass? its reporting the news!

it mentions the hole merely to explain that something very powerful had hit this man, powerful enough to blow holes in cement

i don't see the problem
i thinkl they got nominated for darwin awards because they were under a tree during a thunder storm, I cant remember not knowing that you should never do that.
I like the guy who won them a few years ago whe he was trying to steal a coke can from a vending machine and pulled it on top of him.
No doubt a "guy on a motorcycle" was killed by lightning, as was a man walking across a field, and another having a w*nk at the time.

As for the numbers of golfers struck by lightning, although still very few in number, is, proportionally, quite high.

Yet "cause and effect" evades most headline writers - because you were doing 'X' whilst struck by lightning does NOT mean that doing X caused you to be struck by lightning.

But still, why would the 'meeja' [sic], run a headline story about golfers being more at risk from lightning strikes, when you cold bring in techno-fear by mentioning i-pods and game-boys?

"i-PODS & GAMEBOYS CAN KILL YOU* "
sells a lot more copy than
" There's A Small Chance Of Being Struck By Lighting Whether You Swing A Golf Club, Use A Mobile Phone Or Have A Hip-Flask In Your Pocket"

As for trees and thunderstorms, the thing we were told not to do since infant school?
It is not the risk of the tree conducting the electric charge to you, the tree will take it all, and through its root system, conduct it (fairly) efficiently to earth.

However, as the current travels down from the branches to the trunk, the charge resides on the outside of the tree (Faraday's Cage Effect). This super-heats the sap and moisture just below the bark causing it to 'explode'.
It is this flying explosion of bark debris that can seriously injure you in the event of the tree you are sheltering under being hit.
