23d I think is French for south = SUD with 'something to give you the P - meaning vegetable

Thanks all.

Having looked at the "SPUD" I really don't know what I was thinking. The "(P)opular Primarily gives the P, into SUD.

The "ROOKERY" I find a bit contrived. One where you fine the word and take it back to the Cryptic for confirmation
