On the south side of the Dome, Pfc Clint Ames was also dozing. He sat cross-legged on the soft shoulder of Route 119 with a blanket wrapped around him Indian-style. The air suddenly darkened, as if the bad dreams flitting through his head had assumed physical form. Then he coughed himself awake.

Question: I'm confused with the meaning of 'form.' In this case, does 'form' mean a particular way in which a thing exists or appears OR a shape / an appearance OR something that can be seen only as a shape or outline? Thank you

The clue is in the word 'physical'.
I assume it to mean that he was awake and in reality, no longer dreaming.

His head was now thinking in an actual dimension rather than dream like.
I'd interpret it as meaning that it seemed as if the dreams had become real rather than mere thoughts/imagination. Their form was now reality. So existence/appearance rather than shape.
