Right, I ahve a clothes hanger shortage, and I'm wondering what sort to buy. Should I be using wooden ones only, or is plastic ok? Should I be using wooden for shirts and plastic for jackets or some other such rule? What difference will it make? Are the ones you sometimes get for free when you buy clothes rubbish? The metal or plastic ones you get for pinning skirts to - I am doing right or should I sew little tabs into all of my skirts? Mens trousers - should always fold them? I'm in a quandry and I need guidance!

I cannot imagine that there are any rules worth considering except whatever you find works for you. There will be legions of marketing gurus, media hacks, etc. who will try to exploit the insecure and tell them they MUST have this or that - ignore them all and use whatever does the job. If it is free, so much the better. My only comment would be that thin wire hangers, of the type often used by dry cleaners, are too flimsy to take heavy clothes for more than the odd day and they tend to put creases into trousers that are draped over the bar for any length of time.
Whenever I buy stuff in M&S I always ask for the hangers because they are perfect for the clothes. I prefer hangers with a curve where the shoulder bit goes or you end up with a couple of stickyup bits otherwise.
I do prefer wooden hangers and Wilkinsons do quite nice ones for a quid for three. I prefer those clamp style hangers for trousers though as you get a line across the middle on a bar hanger. The ones they give you with skirts are quite adequate.
I have some really lovely heavy cedarwood hangers with a bar across which belonged to my mother and use these for heavy coats etc..otherwise I have a hodge podge of hangers !
i use the floor - saves the worry
For Mr Senses expensive work attire I use wooden hangers that we sourced from Ikea.Good for mens trousers too! For the kids we had a mix of Ikea ( ok )and Tesco plastic - ten for a quid in their bigger stores very satisfied with them .I use them for hanging stuff straight from the dryer on rails and then transport to bedrooms they have been very sturdy and well enough made not to snag sons sports gear. I would not use free cleaners hangers (wire) as they do more damage over a longer period. If you have lightweight items that slip on plastic hangers wrap an elastic band round hanger end a couple of times for traction! I always take trouser or skirt hangers when you buy clothes from shop. Ikea have cheap effective suit covers for things that you wear very little but want to keep in 'ready to go' condition.
For my own stuff, I have to admit - I use the previous posters system. lol.
