Years sgo I saw this opera at ENO with the wonderful Josephine Barstow as Senta. She did not exactly have a Wagnerian volume, but she persuaded us that she did, wonderful! Was Norman Bailey the Dutchman?

I saw Barstow as Emilia Marty, in the The Makropulos Case, at the Coliseum in the early 90's, Very talented and one of our most "useful" opera singers....there was little that she couldn't do. Not sure if she is active on the operatic stage any more.
To my mind, she made a mistake in taking on the dreaded "cross over" path in recent years !

I saw Dame Josephine Barstow many many times from the 70s to 90s. Last time was as Mere Marie in Poulenc's Carmelites. Riveting. Always a phenomenal actress and singer, though her voice could be raspy and did not please everyone.
Now aware of any cross-overs with her, when was that? But she has been involved with producing. A charming lady, great fun.
She was great in Makropoulos Case, but sensational in Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk (sorry about spelling).
