Hello my husband went and brought a rover 414 last monday.Took it to a local garage as it is second hand, and had no service history[i know!]
The garage looked at the engine and said theres oil in the water which is a classic sympton of the head gasket going. The car hasnt overheated at all and starts and drives excellantly.
My question is, is this a massive problem? Does it need fixed right now? and will it be pricey?
Go onto ebay and go to carparts, put in Head Gasket sealer and there are a couple of products that can be used. I brought some last week. It's worth a try as all you do is put it in the water system (after youv'e drained the system of any anti freeze) and run it until the engines warm and then drain the system Good luck
if you do not fix the problem you will end up in worse trouble. oil in the water after a while causes all the rubber hoses to go soft and perish. this includes all the radiator hoses and heater hoses. you then have the job of replacing the whole lot before they burst.
