Does anyone know how to update the latest updates for the above ipad as it has never been done since owned as least 5 yrs since new as it almost unusable an help would be greatfully welcome.

It may be updating automatically. If you go into "Settings", then "About Device", it should tell you if there are any outstanding updates. If so, just follow instructions.
