Have just bought my first Sunday Telegraph since they stopped the prize crosswords. Is anyone else disappointed with the prizes on offer? For a start - only one prize per competition, no runners-up prizes, and I cannot get excited about a pen and �15 book token. Considering the price of the paper, �1.60, I think they could do a little better. Anyone agree?

Most certainly. I stopped buying the ST when they ditched the prize crossword in favour of the clue writing comp. They did start having a big prize one every month with a mixture of straightfoward and cryptic clues in the 7 magazine....but I think that's been ditched too ! I think the whole paper is poor value on a Sunday and only buy the DT on a Saturday now.I don't even bother to buy it in the week and read it on line.

I also gave up on the Sunday Telegraph when the prize puzzles stopped. On the recommendation of alanogden (who seems to have vanished from AB) I started buying the Financial Times Weekend on Saturdays. There are two hard crosswords, a cryptic and a general knowledge. The prize for the cryptic is reference books and for the GK it is a Conway Stewart pen. They have a long submission date - ten days.

Also there is usually an arts quiz that you enter by email for a prize of a bottle of champers.

As the paper is readable and the magazine has proper articles (not "my favourite whatever" by a d-list celebrity) I think it is much better value than a Sunday Telegraph.

I still get the Times and the Telegraph on Saturdays for the crosswords (and the photo of James May - sigh!)

I haven't bought a copy of The Sunday Telegraph since they moved the crossword to the 7 magazine and I have no intention of buying one in the future.
Thanks Smiffy for the tip about the Financial Times Weekend I think I will give that a try.
