Son rang me last night, Driving home from work his 11 plate diesel Vectra started juddering, so he put it in neutral, took his foot off excelerator, let it coast. Then he said the revs shot up to over 8000. After pulling over and after a short while continued but it happened again . He managed to get home.
Any ideas. Can't take a look myself as I live 300 miles away.

Sounds like the engine management computer it will need to to to a dealer with the correct diagnostic equipment.
As Eddie, did any lights come up on the dash "Engine"?
While this relates to a Mazda6, rather than a Vectra, it does seem to suggest a possible cause:

Perhaps your son should check the oil level on his car? If it's suspiciously high it could well indicate a DPF problem.
