I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard enough dealing with your grief without having to cut through mountains of red tape.
Accept my condolences.

The formalities are tedious but they'll get sorted, just take it a step at a time.

I echo 2sp's comment.....And am wondering why DIY probate is costing so much.
Take a look at this - it's Which? Legal Probate, which costs £199 for three months...

sorry for your loss

£4k for a DIY probate seems high
I wound up a neighbours insolvent estate for well- nothing
Similarly I cannot understand where £4k comes from.

The current fee for obtaining a "Grant of Representation" from the Probate Office is £215 (no fee if the estate is under £5k). The probate form PA1, whilst lengthy, is not particularly complex to complete. All that's needed is to establish what your mother's assets were, fill in the form and swear an oath (either at a solicitor's or a probate office). Who is asking for £4k?
I found the probate process incredibly easy to deal with and the people at the Probate Registry exceptionally helpful. (So much so, in fact, that I nominated them for a Charter Mark, resulting in me receiving a really nice letter from them in response).

So, like NewJudge, I'm confused as to why completing form PA1 should be giving you problems (it's far, far simpler than most 'official' forms, such as the ones for applying for Job Seeker's Allowance or Pension Credit) and bewildered as to where a figure of £4k comes from.
