It's unthinkable, but we had the 30 years' war which was an incredibly bloody conflict between Catholics and Protestants during the mid-1600s, and have recovered from it (mostly). For over a thousand years these people have been taught to hate one another. I think it is the Sunni majority who are the worst, it is their hate-preachers who continue to indoctrinate them.
The good news is, despite the continued increase in the building of mosques financed by the Saudi's and Iran the number of Muslims turning to secularism is rising rapidly. So despite telling the world that Islam is expanding, it is in fact on the decline - though there's a long way to go.
