staying on after changing one left front wheel bearing and Front brake pads. I have fitted the bearing the right way round for ABS pick-up to detect on the rubber seal side which is slightly magnetic.

I know that some vehicles require the warning light to be reset using an OBD diagnostic tool after the offending component has been fixed/replaced. This could be your problem.

I have a feeling that Hymie is right and the warning light most probably needs resetting.
Have you tried using your brakes to see if the ABS is working ( ie braking sharply as in an emergency stop ) ?.
I would try disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and leaving it off for 10 minutes to see if that resets everything before consulting a highwayman with a machine.
Anyone who owns a vehicle manufactured within the last 20 years should search on line for the location of the vehicle’s OBD port and buy one of these:-

It will pay for itself after one use – and avoid the need to part with any money to a highwayman.

There are cheaper versions available – but I have one of these and can recommend it.
