Wedding No Photos Allowed?

My wife was invited to a friend's wedding. She took a camera to take pictures, but they were told 'no photos were allowed as a professional photographer has the sole rights'
I can see the point in protecting the photographer's profit but surely it can't be legal to forbid anyone from taking a photo?

I think if you are invited to X and they say please dont do Y
then you shouldnt do Y if you turn up
otherwise say you have broken you kleg or something

I am not sure if this is a law question
Perhaps one of them was already married and did not want the photos up on Facebook etc and their existing spouse discovering them? Perhaps perhaps perhaps.

^ They have lived together for many years but decided on a 'Big Wedding' to formalise it .
We only had 20 people to our wedding and we put a disposable camera on each guests place. They had great time taking pictures and when we got them all developed there were some brilliant ones!
I hate cameras. People with their phones out make me feel self conscious. I wouldn't want that on my wedding day. I don't blame them.
