I have trained my 5 month old puppy to go to the toilet inside on a puppy pad or newspaper. She has been brilliant, but there is one problem. She'll pee on the paper or pad but wont do the other thing! She prefers to go at random locations around the house. I dont know what to do to tempt her to go on paper. I've tried putting paper in another location so she doesn't have to go in the same place as the pee. Also I have regularly moved the mess onto the paper and prasied her and gave treats but to no avail. Any suggestions???

You can't take the mess to the paper and show it to her and praise her, she won't understand what your talking about. You need to catch the dog in the act to let them know what you want, when pooing interrupt with a startle.."uhuh" ( no yelling) and take them to the pad. and keep there until they finish, give a treat and calmly praise. There is allot more to it, but not enough space on here to explain, go to

go to "behavior" and read "potty training"article, just sub Potty pad for outside and the tips on there can really help. Supervision is the key to training your dog to potty, and always remember if they potty in your house it's your fault..period. Clean up accidents with an enzymatic cleaner to remove the smell completely. Good Luck, there is help on Orangedog, please check it out. ~/:\~

Thanks very much I'll have a look. She does look at me like I'm an alien when I move the mess to the paper you are right!
A 5 month old dog should be trained to go outside (if poss) by now and not poo'ing or pee'ing in the house.

Strart from now and teach it to go outside, my puppies are always trained by 3 months.

Its very difficult as I have always had big dogs (my last two were a sheepdog and a dalmation). I suppose that because she's so tiny I'm a bit more leniant with her. I know when she's about to go because she starts circling around. I'll try putting her outside and waiting until she goes.
