I have seen the rest of series 2 on DVD from America and unfortunately nothing happens with Kate and Jack. Apart from lots of long looks. Stuff almost happens with her and Sawyer but then it turns out the sensitive side was all a ploy and he really is evil and...

he sleeps with Ana Lucia who then gets shot by Michael who has gone off with the others.
Sorry, but you asked and I'm not allowed to tell any of my friends!

OK LeMerchand, because I often miss the point on things so may not have understood

I thought the point of the flash back where he was conning the woman he loved was to say what a clever con man he is, and how he's managed to con everyone on the island and even us, the audience into thinking he's OK? I thought it was basically saying, yes, he is evil.
I am willing to be corrected.

neenynanu - I'm at work and think I'd best not spend too much time on an essay explaining why I think Sawyer's not so bad after all, and I'm off to see "The Lake House" tonight. I'll try to post when back or tomorrow night - but sleeping with A-L: most guys would have, and "the long con" was surely an illustration of who he was rather than what he is becoming on the island? (Though I can see your point on the latter). He showed a lot more humanity in the last few eps than "let's kill every last mf-ing one of them" Jack.
