what would you call a limelight-hogger?!
4 Answers
Im writing a review about a performance, and basically i want to say that the one-man show was basically to serve the guys ego - that it's all centered around him, that he's blowing his own trumpet etc. Im thinking there must be a specific, more intellectual word for this type of person, or this type of instance - someone doing something to make themself look good. Does anyone know what im trying to get at here?? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

This refers to the days of paddle-steamers, on the Mississippi for example, which specialised in putting on very overdone, showy performances. Such an actor would be called a 'show-boater'.
