Bbc Website ‘Hanging’ Desktop Computer

Practically every time I click on a link posted in AB to the BBC website my computer ‘hangs’ completely. I am unable to shut anything down – other websites I have open, Word documents, email – nothing. The only way I can remedy it is to switch the whole system off at the wall socket, and then switch on again. It only seems to happen with that particular website, but it’s very frustrating. I hesitate to attempt to look at the BBC website now.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Might need some technical information: internet browser, type of computer/laptop version of windows etc.

I don't think it can be a BBC-specific flaw, as for me the site works perfectly.

It is odd.
So what internet browser do you use? Are you on windows? If so, what version? Computer or Laptop or mobile device?
Have you tried clearing your cache, Naomi?
Welcome back, Naomi. That was a very short trip to the naughty step.

Jim, IE, Windows 10, and as I said, a desktop.

Garaman, not lately. I forget to do it. Perhaps that's the problem - but I don't know why only the BBC. I'll do it now.

Jackdaw, I think it was a blip. I emailed the Editor - and voila!
Happened to me once.
IE? As TTT would say, you're having a Turkish. Ditch it immediately and change to Chrome or Firefox.
Well it's not clear to me what the error is but I suppose running through the usual checklist won't hurt: trying clearing out cache, cookies etc; check to see if it's any BBC page or just BBC pages with videos; check other websites that also have videos on -- as many as you can, unless your usual internet browsing takes in a lot of websites already; check to see that you have the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer.

The only thing I can say for certain is that it's a local issue. I'd also suggest downloading a second internet browser and testing the site on that, but it's not essential.

Noooo. It does the job. I'm not technically minded enough to mess about changing things. I don't know what I'm doing so I'd probably end up with no system at all!

^That was to Jackdaw.
BBC has been having problems and, for the time being, I am staying clear of the site.

On Wednesday I was at my Desktop PC and thought I would watch the State Opening of Parliament. Clicked on to the BBC iPlayer, saw the Queen and Prince Charles being driven along the Mall and then had a complete 'freeze-up'. Couldn't even switch-off the PC, except by a 'forced shut-down'.

Ahhh, thanks Hans. That's probably it. I thought it odd that it's only the BBC. Let's hope it's soon sorted.

Thanks all.
So far as I am concerned, BBC is back to normal. However, I am using Firefox as my default Browser and links via AB to BBC work fine.

I regret reporting that tests which, this morning, I have done with Internet Explorer all result in virtually negative responses. Upon getting through to BBC site that little wheel just keeps going around all the time.

It is my opinion, which is never challenged by AB's Ed, that Answerbank has a compatibility problem with Internet Explorer.

Incidentally, I have also tested another browser (SeaMonkey) and that works alright.

Pity you don't install an additional Browser as a back-up. There are enough Techies in AB to help you with it.

Hans, I clicked on a link to the BBC a little while ago, and whilst my computer didn’t hang, it was very slow. I’ve just shut that website down and it appears I’ve speeded up again. I really don’t want to mess about with browsers. Thanks so much for your help.
