How Do I Calculate The Shape To Trace Out?
5 Answers
I have a terracotta plant pot that I want to cover / wrap with paper so the paper is flush round the whole outside surface.
The top of the plant pot is wider than the bottom so obviously a rectangular shape doesn’t fit the shape. It needs to be a curved shape to fit correctly.
How do I calculate the shape to trace out the cutting area on the poster design I want to wrap around the plant pot?
Diameter of pot is 12 inches at the top and 8 inches at the bottom.

get a large sheet of any kind of paper that is bigger than the pot. Lay the pot down on the paper and mark it at top and bottom, draw a line between the two marks and make a mark up the side of the pot. lay the mark on the pot against the mark on the paper and roll the pot across the paper until the mark on the pot touches the paper again. mark top and bottom of the pot and draw a line between. Then cut the pattern out roughly leaving it much bigger than the two marked lines and allow a little overlap at the two marked lines. Wrap the pattern around the pot and fasten it temporarily. You should now be able to mark or trim the paper to make a neat finish at top and bottom, if it was me I would leave some extra to tuck underneath to make a neat finish and some to tuck inside the pot as well. When you are happy with the pattern, cut it out of your patterned paper.
