Does a mobile phone dial tone change when you go abroad?

Hi there.

Bit of a strange question, but Im trying to settle a dispute and can't seem to find a conclusive answer on the internet! Does your mobile phone dial tone change when you go abroad? I have a Spanish mobile phone with a Spanish sim card. If I were to go to England and someone from Spain called my mobile phone, would they hear the Spanish dial tone or the English dial tone?

If somebody from spain calls any phone in the world they are going to hear the Spanish *dial* tone.

But a expect you really mean to ask about the ringing tone?

When I was in Germany calling from a UK number to a German number I was thrown off by the "weird" ringing tone. It sounds like it is broken, the pauses are too long and it all feels "wrong" - I was surprised how violently I reacted to it!

Mobiles tend to be silent rather than have a dialling tone. I believe dialling tone is usually generated by the local exchange, but a mobile isn't connected to an exchange. It just fires off the dialled number data when you hit send.

Someone in Spain using a fixed line to dial you would be connected to a local Spanish exchange and hear the Spanish company's dial tone.

I think I do mean ringing tone! The noise they hear inbetween them dialing my number and me picking it up. Would they hear the Spanish one or the English one if I was in England?

Obviously the English one as the phone has no idea what number they are giong to dial....

I suspect ringing tone would be generated and played back to you by the last exchange in the route, which if you were in the UK would be a UK exchange and thus a UK ringing tone.
