Nets, I can understand. All out steps were red. Grandma must have used something different for them.

Me too, though some years ago when in Haworth I saw some in an ironmongers and had to buy them , they live under the sink.:-)

My dad seemed to be fanatical about the brass stuff on the front door being polished each week. I hated doing it.

Cardinal Red Polish for those unless they were painted.

My old Granny used to red lead her front step. Have a vague feeling it was called Cardinal, or something similar.

I remember having to do that. And putting a line along the edging of the step.

Yes, some did patterns or tramlines down each side.
