Educational History cartoon during the 1980's

Does anyone recall during the 1980's, an educational cartoon, that would be shown during the early afternoon or during school holidays which was all about the history of the world i.e Romans, Egypt, Vikings etc. All the characters in the cartoon would always be used from each episode to episode. The only thing I can really rememebr was that during the begining credits of the cartoon, it would go through mans history and that last scene you would see people fleeing the planet earth on spaceships/rockets before the earth exploded.
