Any advice on buying tickets to the Colosseum and other top sights, I'm going in 3 weeks and have been told to avoid the queues its best to buy the tickets online, I've had a look and don't know which site to use, is there an official one, can I buy a ticket to cover a few or is it one ticket one place ? any tips anyone, thanks, Pat. ( I'm 71 so please be gentle )

I wish I could help you on how to book into attractions, my friend is not that long back from Rome,she didn't mind the queues, have an idea of what you want to see, not too many fountains or churches and the like of even old sites like the Colosseum, there's just so much, you can get one of those tour buses - hope on hop off sightseeing tours. Whatever you do, don't put your feet in the fountains, it's a €240 fine since a few months ago. I hope someone can help you better, my friend is at work now but I'll ask her what she thinks later.

We bought tickets at the palatine hill ticket office and visited that site and the forum in the morning - there was no queue at the ticket office. After lunch we went to the coliseum but since the combined ticket is valid for 2 days there is no need to see all of them in one day. Remember it will be very hot in Rome in July.....

A "hop on - hop off" bus tour may be useful to do initially since it help you to orientate and you can plan what and when to visit in more depth. This site provides details of what's available and gives some comparisons on prices and coverage.

if you are staying in a hotel, the concierge/reception desk should be able to help you with most if not all queries.

A number of attractions offer an OAP concession on the gate so take your EHIC card out with you.

We did exactly the same as Toorak, although it was in May, not July......it will be very hot indeed next month !

By the way, don't take any photos of the "gladiators" outside the Colloseum, as they will demand a payment !

When I went a couple of years ago, I went direct to the Colloseum and bought tickets online there, the same with the vatican.

It is well worth doing online in advance - you DO miss the queues because you have a different entrance.

Sadly the Italians have got rid of their free admission for Eu pensioners to lots of attractions, it used to be wonderful. However we didn't queue for the Colosseum but did find the inside of it difficult to get round as I had a foot injury at the time. We booked on line for the Vatican Museum and looking at the queues there it was a extra few Euros well spent.

We were there in February. Pre-booked Colosseum tickets with tickitaly.com

Tickets cost us about 30 Euros each - at the time I thought we had been conned!!

Turned out to be exact opposite - we had a guided tour to the dungeons and the higher areas which majority of tourists do not have access to. Trip lasted about 90 minutes and was good value for money.

Tip of the day - you only need to check in about 15 or 20 minutes prior to your tour start time. Once you go through the entrance gates there are no refreshments etc.
