I have a contract Galaxy phone with 500 minutes per month. Is this purely for phone calls or are the minutes used up by anything else?

i would say yes, texts and data are separate,as minutes count as calls,unless im corrected

As Ivor says, only calls are measured in minutes. Texts will be measured by the number of texts sent (remembering that very long text messages count as multiple texts) and data used by web browsing and other apps will be measured in gigabytes.
