I thought thongs plural was only used in countries such as Australia when they were referring to the shoes that we call flip flops. In this case the thongs would be plural as there would in fact be two of them.

When referring to the undies, they are in fact thong singular. The only reason they are singular is to differentiate between the underwear and the footwear. It is strange as all other brief type undergarments are always plural; pants, knickers, boxers, briefs, tights, etc etc.

I hate thongs. I buy French knickers.
