I have been doing pilates for around twelve weeks now and really enjoy it. I have trouble with my back and it seems good exercise, however there was an article in
the Sunday Express written by a top sports physiotherapist saying that it can cause slipped discs, has anyone else read this and what do you think?

my wife done exactly the same for the same reason and it made her back worse so id say its no good however the doc said she should exercise otherwise her back wouldnt get any better
i think it is just another one of those things that some will tell you it is good for you and others will tell you it is bad. i know several people who do pilates and they all enjoy it too. i think that if you are exercising in a safe environment and in a safe way and you are enjoying it, there shoudn't be any forseeable harm.

however, there are criticisms and as you have back problems you might want to check things out with a professional. there are some thoughts here, in the limitations and criticisms section. but if you read the section above some medical practitioners approve. your individual circumstances need to be considered regardless.

If you do have trouble with your back, you should tell your Pilates teacher. They will be able to tell you which exercises you shouldn't do, and which levels you should go up to on other ones. For example, when doing a Swan Dive, if you have no back problems you can raise your arms when you raise your head and chest, but if you have back trouble your amrs stay on the floor.
Tai Chi is better than Yoga and pilates put together.
