Windows 10
The only operating system available through major High Street retailers is Windows 10. However if you've only got basic computing requirements (such as internet browsing, word processing and desktop publishing, rather than high-end video processing or playing the latest PC video games) a refurbished machine running Windows 7 would be perfectly adequate (and better than Windows 8 or 8.1).

If you're feeling adventurous, and don't mind having to learn lots of new skills, the various versions of Linux (such as Ubuntu) are also a possibility but it helps to be a bit of a 'techie' to get the best from them.

So it would help if you could tell us what you want to do with your next computer, what your budget is and whether you're keen on going down a technically-challenging route.
Or you get a Mac - also available from major High Street retailers
I'll say my usual piece ... if you are technically inept then buy the best Apple you can afford - leave all the settings as standard and just get on with your online life. You won't ever regret it.

If you can't (or won't) afford an Apple (and are technically inept) then you are stuck with Windows. You may as well get Windows 10 and let it keep itself updated. But please install a decent antivirus package and scan regularly for malware.

If you are technically ept then the world is your oyster - but you do need to know what you are doing ... and will probably cock it up anyway - that's the way of computers ...
If you have the necessary skills, or a helpful local techie, buy a machine software free. Loading Windows 10 from cold takes a while but it gives you a chance to tailor it to your needs and turn off the intrusive items. While there are alternative operating systems you`ll need to learn them inside out and may experience compatibility issues with some software or hardware. Please spend a few pounds for a quality antivirus. Depending on your budget look at a bespoke machine at pcspecialist.
Windows 10 seems to me, to be the best for a long time.

And pay 3 x the normal amount, on a MAC ?
