ostriches running across the landscape
of all the zillions of hours of footage of the Great War - about three and half minutes (yes ) 1/2 mins) is the Real Thing and that 15s shot is one bit - the rest is rehearsed behind the lines
Battle of the Somme I think 1916
Also on Disc 7 of The Great War - 1964 series
At the time when films were shown - even tho it was known to be faked ( mixed uniforms is the give-away apparently - the real ones would be wearing the same regimental uniform) men were standing up in their seats shouting Yes yes it is just like that ! and fainting ......

He accepted the German view that Leuven had been burnt as they thought there was an allied counterattack - the burning of the library was later counted as a war-crime. Part of kulturkamof
Part 1 of the Great War 1964 - he exclaimed in real time
'God they filmed it ! the burning of the university. it was meant to be all a great mistake!'
so surprisingly things were filmed
A few days ago AOG had a thread on Bunkirk
and Le paradis massacre. Initial report by Private Pooley disbelieved by British Officer who could not believe Germans would do such a thing. In fact an SS officer had sent a report to Berlin about a pile of machine gunned brits who clearly hadnt died in the field - and then the SS officer said - oh er there must have been a field court martial and summary execution or something
so surprising things are recorded in war

didnt realise that Khruschev made his name there
In 1945 my father commented - you had a golden opportunity when Germany invaded Russia and the other countries - you could have got them on your side instead of wishing to massacre you all
and The Guard replied - "yes yes mistakes were made n the East......"
