The human rights lawyer. It's a male name but I believe I've seen 'her' referred to as 'she.' Could someone please clarify?

She is, a 'she'. Sheesh.
Yes she is the lawyer who helped secure the release of the Guilford Four
An article in the Telegraph says she was called Jean but no-one knows why she changed it to Gareth.
Gareth is her middle name ..or part of her surname?
It's not a double barreled name though

also, she is a Peirce, not a Pierce.
She is indeed a woman, and a thoroughly nice one apparently according to my Mum, who met her when working as a legal secretary
